What is UTM tracking?

A UTM code (short for Urchin Tracking Module) is a little string of text you add to the end of a URL so you can track exactly where your web traffic is coming from. It’s not as nerdy as it sounds, and it’s super useful when you’re running ads, email campaigns, or social posts.

What does a UTM code look like?

What do the parts mean?

  • utm_source: Where the traffic is coming from (e.g., instagram, google, newsletter)

  • utm_medium: The type of channel (e.g., social, cpc, email)

  • utm_campaign: What the campaign is called (e.g., fall_launch, holiday_promo)

Optional extras:

  • utm_term: Keywords if you’re running search ads

  • utm_content: Used to differentiate versions of the same ad (great for A/B testing)

Why should you care?

Because UTM codes let you see exactly how people are finding you in Google Analytics. You can:

  • Track how many clicks your geofencing ad generated

  • See how much traffic was driven to your site from your latest newsletter

  • Compare performance across different social platforms

  • Learn what campaigns actually convert (and which ones are just...meh)

TL;DR:

UTM codes = secret tracking sauce for marketers. Just tag your links and let the data roll in.
